{"id":501,"date":"2025-11-17T00:11:28","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T00:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hartfordlit.org\/?p=501"},"modified":"2026-01-28T15:29:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T15:29:45","slug":"to-the-first-of-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hartfordlit.org\/?p=501","title":{"rendered":"To the First of August."},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>To the First of August.<\/h5>\n<p>by Ann Plato<\/p>\n<p>Britannia&#8217;s isles proclaim,<br \/>\nThat freedom is their theme;<br \/>\nAnd we do view those honor&#8217;d lands,<br \/>\nWith soul-delighting mien.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And unto those they held in gloom,<br \/>\nGave ev&#8217;ry one their right;<br \/>\nThey did disdain fell slavery&#8217;s shade,<br \/>\nAnd trust in freedom&#8217;s light.<\/p>\n<p>Then unto ev&#8217;ry British blood,<br \/>\nTheir noble worth revere,<br \/>\nAnd think them ever noble men,<br \/>\nAnd like them, hence appear.<\/p>\n<p>And when on Britain&#8217;s isles remote,<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re then in freedom&#8217;s bounds,<br \/>\nAnd while we stand on British ground,<br \/>\nYou&#8217;re free,&#8211;you&#8217;re free,&#8211;resounds.<\/p>\n<p>Lift ye that country&#8217;s banner high,<br \/>\nAnd may it nobly wave,<br \/>\nUntil beneath the azure sky,<br \/>\nMan shall be no more a slave.<\/p>\n<p>And oh! when youth&#8217;s extatic hour,<br \/>\nWhen winds and torrents foam,<br \/>\nAnd passion&#8217;s glowing noon are past,<br \/>\nTo bless that free born home;<\/p>\n<p>Then let us celebrate the day,<br \/>\nAnd lay the thought to heart,<br \/>\nAnd teach the rising race the way,<br \/>\nThat they may not depart.<\/p>\n<pre>Public Domain \r\n\r\nSource: Ann Plato, Essays; Including Biographies and Miscellaneous Pieces, in Prose and Poetry.
