How fair upon the admiring sight,
\nIn Learning’s sacred fane,
\nWith cheek of bloom, and robe of white,
\nGlide on yon graceful train.
\nBlest creatures! to whose gentle eye
\nEarth’s gilded gifts are new,
\nYe know not that distrustful sigh
\nWhich deems its vows untrue.<\/p>\n
There is a bubble on your cup
\nBy buoyant fancy nurs’d,
\nHow high its sparkling foam leaps up!
\nYe do not think ’twill burst:
\nAnd be it far from me to fling
\nOn budding joys a blight,
\nOr darkly spread a raven’s wing
\nTo shade a path so bright.<\/p>\n
There twines a wreath around your brow,
\nBlent with the sunny braid;
\nLove lends its flowers a radiant glow\u2014
\nYe do not think ’twill fade:
\nAnd yet ’twere safer there to bind
\nThat plant of changeless dye,
\nWhose root is in the lowly mind,
\nWhose blossom in the sky.<\/p>\n
But who o’er beauty’s form can hang,
\nNor think how future years
\nMay bring stern sorrow’s speechless pang
\nOr, disappointment’s tears,
\nUnceasing toil, unpitied care,
\nCold treachery’s serpent moan\u2014
\nIlls that the tender heart must bear,
\nUnanswering and alone.<\/p>\n
Yet as the frail and fragrant flower,
\nCrushed by the sweeping blast,
\nDoth even in death an essence pour,
\nThe sweetest, and the last,
\nSo woman’s deep, enduring love,
\nWhich nothing can appal,
\nHer steadfast faith, that looks above
\nFor rest, can conquer all.<\/p>\n
