{"id":621,"date":"2026-03-24T21:21:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T21:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hartfordlit.org\/?p=621"},"modified":"2026-04-01T20:44:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T20:44:58","slug":"621","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hartfordlit.org\/?p=621","title":{"rendered":"A Cup of Coffee"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A Cup of Coffee<\/h2>\n<p>by Bessy Reyna<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Watch me!&#8221; I Tell Rob,<br \/>\nthe lovely dark-haired friend<br \/>\nwho has joined me for lunch<br \/>\n&#8220;Watch me, I&#8217;ll have to pretend<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know that the coffee is a gift from him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">We dance the tango<\/p>\n<p>Ricardo, the Argentinian man,<br \/>\nis so happy to see me.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s been so long since I had lunch<br \/>\nat this small place<br \/>\nhidden on the second floor of an old building<\/p>\n<p>Rob and I sit by the window<br \/>\ntalking about books and watching<br \/>\nthe people below us<br \/>\nas they stroll on Pratt Street.<\/p>\n<p>Ricardo whispers to me in a voice<br \/>\nwith the cadence of the pampas,<br \/>\n<em>\u00bfQuer\u00e9s un caf\u00e9?<\/em>\u00a0 Do you want a cup of coffee?<br \/>\nI know I shouldn&#8217;t<br \/>\nit would be one too-many for the day,<br \/>\nbut I can taste the offer<br \/>\nthe I-want-to-give-you-something<br \/>\nbecause-I-am-so-happy-to-see-you!<br \/>\nbursting behind the smile<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">we dance the tango<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Watch me&#8221; I say to Rob,<br \/>\nI now have to pretend<br \/>\nthat I want to pay for the coffee<br \/>\nand he will refuse to take the money.<\/p>\n<p>The proper behavior<br \/>\nthe warmth, generosity,<br \/>\nthe nostalgia that engulfs me now<br \/>\nIn how many restaurants can you get free coffee<br \/>\njust because the owner is happy to see you?<\/p>\n<p>A native language coming back<br \/>\nto rescue me<br \/>\ntransforming me<br \/>\ntransporting me<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">At lunch, we danced the tango.<\/p>\n<p>I say goodbye to Rob,<br \/>\nturn and give Ricardo <em>gracias por el caf\u00e9<\/em><br \/>\nbefore I descend the narrow wooden stairs<br \/>\nthat return me to<br \/>\nanother culture my brave new world.<\/p>\n<p>Around the corner<br \/>\na homeless man awaits<br \/>\n&#8220;Can I have a dime for a cup of coffee?&#8221; he asks<br \/>\nHis voice startles me,<br \/>\nI smile<br \/>\n&#8220;Come with me and I&#8217;ll buy you a coffee&#8221;<br \/>\nI tell him, pointing at the<br \/>\n&#8220;COFFEE AND PASTRIES&#8221; sign a few feet away<br \/>\n&#8220;No!
