Extract from The Anarchiad, Book XXIII<\/h6>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by David Humphreys, Joel Barlow, John Trumbull, and Lemuel Hopkins <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lemuel Hopkins<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (1750-1801), principal author of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Anarchiad<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, was known as an innovative physician who specialized in the treatment of tuberculosis, to which he prescribed fresh air and a healthy diet over old-fashioned \u201ccures\u201d such as donkey\u2019s milk instead cow\u2019s milk. (He later wrote a satirical poem entitled &#8220;Epitaph on a Patient Killed by a Cancer Quack.&#8221;) Having received an honorary Master of Arts degree from Yale in 1784, Hopkins was aligned with the Wits in both their intellectual and literary pursuits as well as their Federalist political leanings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Hartford Wits together wrote a satirical poem called \u201cThe Anarchiad or American antiquities: a poem on the restoration of chaos and substantial night,\u201d which was published in 12 installments in the <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New Haven Gazette and the Connecticut magazine <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from October 26, 1786 to September 13, 1787.
